Water Filtration Systems in Tucson, AZ — Cleaner Water, Longer-Lasting Plumbing

Water Filtration and Water Softener Installation in Tucson

Tucson’s tap water is safe to drink. It’s also extremely hard, mineral-heavy, and — depending on your neighborhood — carries enough dissolved solids to leave white scale on every surface it touches. That hardness isn’t just cosmetic. It shortens the life of your water heater, grinds through faucet cartridges, clogs showerheads, builds up inside your pipes, and makes your skin and hair feel dry no matter how much moisturizer you use.

Al Coronado Plumbing installs whole-home water softeners, whole-home filtration systems, reverse osmosis (RO) drinking water systems, and combination setups. We help you figure out which system actually solves your specific problem — because “water filtration” isn’t one-size-fits-all, especially in Tucson.

What’s in Tucson’s Water?

Understanding what’s coming out of your tap helps you choose the right system. Here’s what Tucson Water’s own reports and independent testing consistently show:

Water Filtration Systems

The Water Quality Association considers anything above 10.5 grains “very hard.” Tucson’s water is firmly in that territory, and it’s even harder in some parts of the metro — especially areas served by blended Colorado River water.

Water Filtration Systems

TDS includes calcium, magnesium, sodium, and other dissolved minerals. Higher TDS means more mineral content affecting taste, scale buildup, and appliance performance.

Water Filtration Systems

Tucson Water uses chloramine (chlorine combined with ammonia) as a disinfectant. It’s effective for keeping water safe through the distribution system, but some residents notice a taste or smell, and chloramine is harder to remove than free chlorine — standard carbon filters don’t fully remove it.

Water Filtration Systems

Depending on your neighborhood and the age of your home’s plumbing, trace contaminants like lead (from older solder joints), PFAS, and other compounds may be present at varying levels.

The Tucson Water annual quality report (available from Tucson Water’s website) breaks this down in detail for your specific water source. We can also test your water on site to measure hardness, TDS, and other factors before recommending a system.

Water Softener vs. Water Filtration: What Tucson Homeowners Need

These terms get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. Many Tucson homes benefit from both.

We assess your home’s water, your priorities, and your budget, then recommend the setup that makes sense — not the most expensive option on the shelf.

Water Softeners

A water softener removes hardness minerals — primarily calcium and magnesium — through an ion exchange process. The softened water flows through your entire home, protecting your pipes, water heater, faucets, and appliances from scale buildup.

What a softener does well:

  • Eliminates scale on fixtures, showerheads, and glass
  • Extends the life of your water heater and other appliances significantly
  • Reduces soap usage (soft water lathers much more effectively)
  • Makes skin and hair feel softer after bathing
  • Protects your plumbing from interior mineral buildup

What a softener doesn’t do:

  • It doesn’t remove chloramine, chlorine, sediment, heavy metals, or other contaminants
  • It doesn’t improve drinking water taste beyond reducing mineral flavor
  • Softened water has slightly elevated sodium content (a concern for some people and for irrigating certain plants)

Whole-Home Water Filtration

A whole-home filtration system (sometimes called a point-of-entry system) treats all water entering your home — removing or reducing sediment, chloramine, chlorine, and depending on the system, a broader range of contaminants. Higher-end systems use multi-stage filtration (sediment, activated carbon, catalytic carbon, KDF media) to address Tucson’s specific water chemistry.

What filtration does well:

  • Removes chloramine taste and odor
  • Filters sediment that causes cloudy water
  • Reduces certain chemical contaminants
  • Protects plumbing and appliances from particulate damage

What filtration alone doesn’t do:

  • Standard carbon filtration doesn’t soften water. Your hardness minerals pass right through.

The Combination Approach

For most Tucson homes, the ideal setup is a water softener paired with a whole-home carbon filter. The softener handles hardness; the filter handles chloramine, taste, and particulates. This combination protects your plumbing, extends appliance life, and makes your water taste and feel noticeably better.

We assess your home’s water, your priorities, and your budget, then recommend the setup that makes sense — not the most expensive option on the shelf.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) Drinking Water Systems

If your primary concern is drinking water quality, a point-of-use reverse osmosis system is the most effective option. An RO system installs under your kitchen sink and delivers purified water through a dedicated faucet.

RO filtration removes up to 99% of dissolved solids, including minerals, heavy metals, chloramine, fluoride, and most organic compounds. The result is exceptionally clean, clear, neutral-tasting drinking water.

  • It’s the best way to deal with Tucson’s high TDS levels for drinking and cooking water.
  • It removes chloramine that standard carbon filters struggle with.
  • It’s a relatively affordable upgrade — much less than whole-home systems — and the filters last 6 to 12 months depending on usage.
  • Many Tucson homeowners use an RO system in combination with a whole-home softener: the softener protects the plumbing, and the RO provides clean drinking water.

We install under-sink RO systems and connect them to your existing cold water line and a dedicated RO faucet. Some homeowners also connect the RO output to their refrigerator’s ice maker and water dispenser.

How Water Treatment Protects Your Plumbing

This is the angle most people miss. Water treatment isn’t just about taste and convenience — it’s about protecting the plumbing infrastructure you’ve already invested in:

Water Filtration Systems

Softened water dramatically reduces sediment buildup inside your tank, meaning less stress on the heating element and a longer-lasting unit. In Tucson, this can mean the difference between replacing your water heater at 8 years versus 12+.

Water Filtration Systems

Hard water grinds through cartridges, valves, and seals. Homeowners with softened water replace faucet components far less often.

Water Filtration Systems

Mineral scale narrows pipes over time. Softened water stops that accumulation and can even allow existing scale to gradually dissolve.

Water Filtration Systems

Dishwashers, washing machines, and ice makers all perform better and last longer with treated water.

Your Plumbing Checklist To Stop Frustrating Leaks

Water softener systems transform your everyday life

Hard water and mineral deposits can also damage your faucets—if you’re noticing buildup or leaks, our faucet repair services in Picture Rocks can restore proper function. Water softeners remove impurities that make water “hard” with minerals and other deposits. Your appliances, fixtures, showers, and tubs will show less staining, and you’ll use less soap and detergent. Your clothing will stay brighter and more colorful, and even your skin and hair become softer without polluting elements in the water. Contact us today for your water softener installation. If your fixtures are already showing signs of hard water damage, we also offer faucet repairs in Vail and throughout the Tucson area to fix leaks caused by mineral buildup and corrosion.

Removing impurities becomes even more important for the water we’ll actually drink. Tucson water quality isn’t what it once was, and reverse osmosis filtration systems are becoming ever more popular in the Old Pueblo. Al Coronado Plumbing has plenty of options when it comes to keeping your drinking water pure.

Water Filtration FAQs

How hard is Tucson’s water?

Very hard — typically 12 to 22 grains per gallon depending on your area and water source. This is well above the threshold where a water softener makes a meaningful difference in your plumbing and quality of life.

Do I need a water softener, a filter, or both?

It depends on what bothers you most. If scale buildup and appliance damage are your primary concerns, a softener is the priority. If taste and chloramine are the issue, a filtration system (or RO for drinking water) is the answer. For comprehensive protection, both working together is the gold standard. We test your water and recommend based on your actual results.

Will a water softener make my water taste salty?

Barely. The ion exchange process replaces calcium and magnesium ions with sodium, but the amount of sodium added is very small — far less than you’d get from a single slice of bread. Most people can’t taste the difference. If sodium is a concern for health reasons, potassium chloride can be used instead of salt.

How much does a whole-home water softener cost in Tucson?

Cost varies based on system capacity (which depends on your household size and water hardness), brand, and installation complexity. We provide a written estimate that covers the unit, installation, and any necessary plumbing modifications. Remember our current $100 off special on whole-home installations.

How often do filters and softener media need to be replaced?

Softener resin typically lasts 10 to 15 years with proper maintenance. The system periodically regenerates itself using salt that you add to the brine tank. Whole-home carbon filters need replacement every 6 to 12 months depending on usage. RO membranes last 2 to 3 years, with pre-filters changed every 6 to 12 months.

Can a filtration system help with the white scale on my shower glass and fixtures?

A water softener will. A carbon filter alone won’t — it doesn’t remove hardness minerals. If scale is your primary complaint, the softener is the component you need.
